Sugar CEO Vineeta Singh normalising crying at workplace

Article - Nov.16,2022

Have you ever been on the verge of an emotional breakdown but had to keep it bottled up because you were at work? Has the fear of being labelled as weak and being judged by others kept you from expressing yourself?

Vineeta Singh, CEO of Sugar, has recently called for normalising emotional outbursts at work stating, ‘It is a self expression, not a ‘breakdown’’.  The segment from Singh’s podcast with Shantanu, the creator of the Bombay Shaving Company, has now gone viral and is the subject of lively discussion on social media. The Shark Tank Panelist added that women use crying as a coping mechanism to deal with the rigours of the workplace and that it makes them stronger when they recover.

“Let’s normalise crying at workplace. It’s self expression, not a “breakdown”, so please don’t “freak out”. Please don’t stop giving us feedback. Please don’t think you need to treat us any differently because we shed a few tears. It’s just another form of communication and we don’t want to feel embarrassed about it anymore. And we generally don’t want you to get too sympathetic about it either.

Crying it out is an important coping mechanism for a lot of women and it just helps us release the pain and come back stronger!

People reacted differently to her post. One commented, “Yes! Crying at workplace is absolutely normal for people who are passionate about their work, who work with a certain conviction, and who emotionally invest themselves in the work that they do. And… it’s more of frustration/helplessness about not doing the right thing, than weakness. “

While another remarked, “ That doesn’t make any sense, “normalise crying at workplace”? I will be freaked out if a colleague started crying just because they had a mood swing or they wanted to cry for a bit lol. Its like please NORMALISE SCREAMING, because thats not a mental breakdown, its just how some people communicate and its reacting to things at that exact moment. I believe bringing everything to the workplace is not necessary, sometimes you keep your guns at home so you wont fire them when not needed.”

Research shows that crying has numerous benefits associated with it. It soothes us mentally, elevates our mood and relieves stress.
